In a cultural atmosphere very versatile location
The Eiffel Art Studio of the Hungarian State Opera House is a unique workshop, storage, rehearsal, visitor and training centre, unique in Europe. A truly new multifunctional cultural centre.
As the Opera's chamber theatre, the Eiffel Art Studio aims to be a home for contemporary opera, modern ballet, baroque works, as well as experimental, fusion and all-arts performances that push genre boundaries, while also being a truly versatile venue.
The Art Studio is also internationally unique in its diversity. It combines theatre operations and a visitor centre with workshop, storage and rehearsal functions. The venue offers a special place for family and children's programmes, while children can also enjoy the free play house next to the cloakroom on the ground floor, the Erzsébet Szőnyi Baby Cube, and the music-themed play area, the György Ránki Music Room, located on the right side of the Eiffel Art Studio.
The Hungarian State Opera House's new performance space, warehouse and visitor centre in Kőbánya, a wonderful and versatile venue for events in the renovated diesel hall of the former MÁV Northern Vehicle Repair. The building's past has given it an industrial, modern design.
The most valuable building in the former industrial area of the rust belt along Kőbányai út, the Eiffel Hall, built in the 1880s, is one of the most important shrines of Hungarian railway history, and served as a repair shop for 124 years until 2009.
The huge basilical hall building, declared a historical monument in 2011, and three smaller old buildings have been converted into the new workshop, storage and rehearsal centre of the Hungarian State Opera and Erkel Theatre.
Due to the monument regulations, it was a major design challenge to integrate the numerous functions with different needs into buildings that once had a completely different layout. The designers had to learn all the ins and outs of opera and ballet in order to create spaces that would meet the sometimes specific needs of the audience.
The imposing reception area is located in the central wing of the five-bay Eiffel Hall, opened from Kőbányai út, where the riveted steel structure and transparent polycarbonate roof are revealed in all their glory.
Here you will find a railway historical curiosity, the 1912 steam locomotive 327 and its attached dining car, which serves as a canteen.
From the foyer, high doors with locks on both sides lead to the theatre and rehearsal rooms in the side aisles with higher ceilings and a studio-quality orchestra rehearsal room. By pushing the auditorium seating into the back wall, levelling the orchestra pit and opening the doors to the foyer, the entire area can be made compact and flexible to meet the needs of all types of events.
The five-bay hall is larger than the Parliament, covering 25 000 square metres, roughly three and a half football pitches. It is named not because of Gustave Eiffel's contribution, but because it was built using similar technology to the Eiffel Tower.
