Multifunctional cultural venue
The former Ganz Works industrial building was converted into a large hall for 368 people, a small hall for 120 people, two rehearsal rooms, a chamber room, and associated service rooms and changing rooms.
Both inside and out, the building is sublime and breathtaking.
The interweaving of the monumental buildings of the former industrial citadel, the Ganz factory, with the modern metropolitan environment has created a unique atmosphere in Millenáris Park, which has quickly become a favourite of many.
The new National Dance Theatre of nearly 7000 square metres was built in the former industrial building of the GANZ Works in Millenáris Park, Building E.
The industrial hall, with its classic three-bay layout, has been adapted to meet the needs of the dance profession.
“The Ganz Works were home to some of the great scientists of the time, and the historical spirit of the place is clearly transferable to the contemporary art world.”
The reconstruction work therefore included the preservation and visualisation of the riveted supporting columns of the steel structure of the former transformer factory.
The building's central venue is a 368-seat auditorium with a dynamically adaptable mobile auditorium, converted from a former studio space, and featuring a 16-metre by 24-metre stage. The building also houses two rehearsal rooms, a chamber space for educational and recreational programmes, a recording studio, and associated service and dressing rooms.
From folk to classical ballet, from ballet to contemporary dance, from social dance to interactive children's performances, the Dance Theatre maintains interest with a diversity of genres. They present nearly 300 performances a year, with an annual audience of nearly 100,000 for their national productions.
